How to Remove a Rear Tire on a Schwinn Impact Bicycle

The Impact is a signature mountain bike model from the Schwinn that was offered in the late 1980s and early 1990s. When restoring or maintaining the function of your Schwinn Impact, check the tire tubes to ensure they remain free of cuts or lacerations. Unlike more modern mountain bikes, the Schwinn Impact is not equipped with a quick release lever. The Bicycle Tutor recommends using a set of tire levers when removing the rear tire to avoid damaging the metallic rims.

Step 1

Hold the chainstay protector of your Schwinn Impact while lifting the rear tire off the ground. Raise the brake release lever to detach the corresponding cable. Align a properly sized socket wrench around the hub bolt in the center of the rear wheel.

Step 2

Rotate the socket wrench counterclockwise to loosen the bolt. Lower the wheel axle from the rear dropouts of your Schwinn Impact mountain bike. Place the rear wheel onto a flat worktable with the cassette facing up.

Step 3

Lift the gear cluster off the center of the rear wheel. Unscrew the small plastic cap to reveal the air valve of the rear tire. Depress the valve stem with the hooked end of a tire lever to ensure it has been completely deflated.

Step 4

Lift the body of the tire while sliding the flattened end of a tire lever under the bead. Connect the hooked end of the tire lever around an adjacent wheel spoke. Repeat the process two spokes down on the rear wheel of your Schwinn Impact.

Step 5

Insert a third lever under the tire bead. Pull the lever around the circumference of your rear wheel to loosen the tire bead. Remove the rear tire from the metallic rim to check the condition of the internal tube.
