The decision to have gastric bypass is one that should not be taken lightly because it will leave you open to a lifetime of vitamin deficiencies. One of the most important deficiencies is vitamin B-12. It is essential that you take your supplements for B-12 as a gastric bypass patient because the side effects from the deficiencies are irreversible. Always consult with your surgeon about your supplement regimen and be sure to stay the course when it comes to getting your B-12.

Vitamin B-12

Vitamin B-12 is for red blood cells and nerve function. It is called water-soluble, which means any excess is usually excreted through the urinary system; however, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center, B-12 is actually stored by the liver for future usage. This vitamin is naturally occurring in milk, eggs, poultry and shellfish. Most healthy people can absorb an adequate amount of vitamin B-12 through a normal, balanced diet.

Gastric Bypass and Vitamin B-12

Vitamin B-12 is absorbed primarily in the stomach. It requires a high amount of stomach acid and an enzyme called pepsin. The stomach also produces an enzyme called intrinsic factor that is necessary in the absorption of this vitamin. Bariatric surgery removes the cells that produce both acid and intrinsic factor. This makes it more difficult for the body to absorb B-12 and puts you at risk for a deficiency.

Symptoms of Vitamin B-12 Deficiency

It may be difficult to determine if you have a B-12 deficiency without a blood test. A specific kind of anemia known as megaloblastic anemia is a symptom of long-term B-12 deficiency. This can result in fatigue, pale skin and shortness of breath. B-12 can also affect your nervous system. With a B-12 deficiency, numbness and tingling in the arms and legs can also occur, along with trouble walking, disorientation, memory loss, dementia and possible mood changes. These may not be reversible with treatment.

Recommended Dosage for Vitamin B-12

It is necessary for you to take a vitamin B-12 supplement after your gastric bypass surgery. The University of Washington Medical Center recommends 1,000 micrograms daily. You can either take it as a sublingual, or under-the-tongue pill, or as a liquid medication. Your doctor can also recommend monthly B-12 shots to maintain your levels and avoid deficiencies.
