While surfers prefer to stand on the board while riding breaking waves, bodyboarders utilize a more aerodynamic stance that involves laying your stomach across the board. Compared to the fiberglass surfboard, the bodyboard features a more lightweight design as it is constructed from high-density foam. Pro bodyboarders have the ability to execute high-speed spins and aerial tricks at the peak of the wave. Wear a pair of swimming flippers to increase the speed of your bodyboard.

Step 1

Place your foam bodyboard onto the sand about 30 feet from the ocean. Slide your feet into a pair of pliable swim fins made from rubber. Avoid rigid swim fins as these may hinder your movement.

Step 2

Undo the Velcro wrist strap located on the end of the bodyboard leash. Fasten the strap around your wrist to prevent the board from floating out of your control. Walk out into the ocean until you reach waist-deep water.

Step 3

Lower the underside of the bodyboard onto the water. Lay on top of the bodyboard with your hands wrapped around the rounded front end. Kick your flippers through the water to navigate your way past the breaking swell.

Step 4

Rotate your shoulders to point the bodyboard towards the sandy beach. Turn your head to watch for a breaking wave. Kick your flippers through the ocean as the wave approaches.

Step 5

Lift the front end of the bodyboard out of the water as you drop-in to the breaking wave. Transfer your body weight onto your elbow to carve across the water. Lean back as you begin to ascend the sloping face of the wave.

Step 6

Raise your flippers out of the water as you reach the apex of the wave. Rotate your shoulders quickly to perform a flat spin. Lower your feet back into the water as you complete a 360 degree rotation.

Step 7

Lean forward as you drop back in to the wave. Kick your flippers to propel the board forward and avoid getting crushed by the falling water. Add variations to the flat spin to increase your bag of tricks.
