Maintaining a diet that provides the necessary proportions of potassium and vitamin B-12 can prevent vestibular issues, or problems with perception and balance. A deficiency in vitamin B-12 in particular will cause vestibular issues directly. However, ingesting sufficient potassium will cause a rise in calcium levels in addition to symptoms of a potassium deficiency, which include weakness, fatigue and muscle deterioration. High calcium can cause muscle weakness, dementia, frequent urination, vomiting and other issues conducive to nutrient loss and possible vestibular issues.
Step 1
Assess your diet to determine whether it contains adequate amounts of potassium and vitamin B-12. Adolescents older than 14 and adults require 2.4 mcg per day from foods like eggs, meats, poultry, fortified foods, dairy products, organ meats and shellfish. If you do not eat many of these foods daily or maintain a special diet that specifically excludes foods that contain vitamin B-12, such as veganism, supplement your diet with B-12 vitamin pills.
Step 2
Take vitamin B-12 supplements if your diet does not provide adequate amounts daily, and speak to your doctor, nutritionist or dietitian to determine the best means to transition B-12 back into your diet. It usually is better to maintain the most comprehensively nutritious diet than to sustain an inadequately nutritious one and supplementing it with nutrient pills.
Step 3
Visit your doctor to have him determine your blood potassium and calcium levels. Based on the proportion of each nutrient in your blood, your doctor will make a determination regarding how you should alter your diet and what supplements -- if any -- that you should take. Specifically, if your potassium levels are low and your calcium levels are high, your doctor will likely prescribe foods that are particularly high in potassium so that you ingest more than the required daily amount, which will both raise your potassium levels and lower your calcium levels. Your doctor may also prescribe dietary supplements while you transition your diet to a healthier one. High potassium and low calcium is the reverse -- it requires the ingestion of more calcium.
