A warm and flaky fruit pie is a festive and flavorful addition to any gathering, celebration or holiday. Make a simple, semi-homemade apple and berry pie by combining fresh fruit with a pre-baked pie crust from the grocery store. Pick berries that are in season for the richest and sweetest flavor. Consider combining two or three types of berries for a deeper flavor, such as blackberries with strawberries, or raspberries with blueberries. For added dimension, top your fruit pie with a dollop of whipped cream and cinnamon, a drizzle of melted dark chocolate or additional fresh fruit. Serve with vanilla ice cream for a tasty and eye-catching dessert.

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 450 degrees Fahrenheit.

Step 2

Separate the two deep dish pie crusts and set aside.

Step 3

Place the sliced apples and fresh berries into a large bowl.

Step 4

Sprinkle the sugar, cinnamon and lemon zest over the apples and berries. Toss gently to coat.

Step 5

Spoon the fruit mixture into one of the deep dish pie crusts, making a hill shape in the center.

Step 6

Top the fruit with 2 tbsp. of unsalted butter.

Step 7

Remove the second pie crust from the pan and place over the fruit.

Step 8

Pinch the edges of the two pie crusts together, cutting off any extra dough that hangs over the edge of the pan.

Step 9

Cut six to eight slits in the top pie crust with a butter knife.

Step 10

Place the pie on a baking sheet and slide into the preheated oven. Bake for 10 minutes.

Step 11

Reduce the heat to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Bake the pie for an additional 40 to 50 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown.

Step 12

Remove the pie from the oven and cool on a wire rack. Slice with a sharp knife and serve.

Tips and Warnings

  • For a fancy touch, use small, decorative cookie cutters to cut shapes into the top of your crust. Substitute blackberries or sliced strawberries for the blueberries and raspberries, if desired. If the edges of your pie begin to cook faster than the rest, place some aluminum foil around the edge of the pie to prevent it from burning.
