Serving Tips
Serving tips are designed to improve your serving consistency and accuracy. According to volleyball professional Kerri Walsh, a consistent toss is the key to an accurate serve. If you are right-handed, you want to toss the ball up with your left hand right in front of your right shoulder. To put extra power behind your serve, follow through with your wrist, making sure that your wrist does not bend during your hit. To complete your serve properly, follow all the way through with your serve.
Setting Tips
Learning how to properly set a ball will help you increase your teammates' chances of a successful shot or spike against the other team. Similar to serving, the position of your hands is essential to a successful set. When the ball is hit towards you, set the ball by only touching it with your fingers. Touching it with your palm will deaden your set, resulting in reduced velocity and height on your end. As you set the ball, use only your wrists to push the ball up with your fingers; do not perform any excess motion with your hands or fingers.
Jumping Tips
Jumping tips are designed to help you increase your vertical jump. Increasing your jumping ability will help you defend as well as spike the ball. Weighted jumps are an effective way to increase your vertical. Place ankle weights on each of your ankles, bending at the knees until your quadriceps are parallel with the ground. From this position, burst up, pushing up and away until you are as high as you can get. Land squarely on both feet, repeating until fatigued.
Conditioning Tips
Conditioning tips will help improve your endurance levels and minimize fatigue during games. Performing minimal weightlifting with dumbbells will help you strengthen your arms, indirectly increasing your hitting and setting power. Interval training is one way to improve your overall level of fitness. Start by performing a cardiovascular exercise such as jogging or biking for an extended period of time. During the exercise, transition to full speed for 30 seconds at a time. Return to your original speed and repeat until fatigued.
