Granola is a delicious combination of grains, dried fruits, nuts and seeds. According to the Mayo Clinic, granola is a good source of protein and fiber, but many store bought brands are typically high in sugar and fat. Making your own natural granola is a healthy and less expensive way to enjoy this breakfast treat without the added calories. Granola can be served with cold milk, over yogurt, or eaten on its own as a snack.

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 325 F. Spray a light coat of cooking spray on the cookie sheet.

Step 2

Spread the chopped nuts on the baking sheet and bake about 10 minutes or until golden brown. Immediately transfer to a plate to cool. Set the oven temperature to 350 F.

Step 3

In a small bowl, stir the applesauce, honey, cinnamon and vanilla. Set the bowl aside.

Step 4

In a large bowl, pour in the puffed brown rice and oats. Stir together until they are mixed well. Add the contents of the small bowl and mix together with your hands. The mixture should look clumpy.

Step 5

Spread an even layer of the granola mixture onto the cookie sheet. Place the cookie sheet in the oven and occasionally stir the mixture. Bake for 30 minutes or until golden brown. Remove the granola from the oven let it cool.

Step 6

In a large bowl combine the baked nuts with the granola mixture, raisins and apple pieces. Let the completed granola cool and then store in an airtight container.
