Baking in a pumpkin creates a surprising and memorable presentation, whether you opt for a savory stew or a rich and sweet bread pudding. Select dishes that pair well with the flavor of pumpkin, ranging from apple and cinnamon for sweet dishes to strongly spiced dishes with chilies and cumin. You can opt for a large pumpkin to serve a crowd, or use smaller, individual pumpkins for each person.
Step 1
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
Step 2
Cut a circle out of the top of the pumpkin with a sharp knife. Work carefully to create a neat edge. Remove the top of the pumpkin and set aside.
Step 3
Clean the seeds and pulp from the pumpkin. Scrape away any residual stringiness with a metal spoon or melon baller. Clean the top of the pumpkin in the same way.
Step 4
Rub the inside of the pumpkin with butter.
Step 5
Line a baking sheet with kitchen parchment. Place the pumpkin shell onto the parchment lined sheet.
Step 6
Bake the filled pumpkin until tender, typically 90 minutes to two hours. Remove from the oven and transfer to a serving platter with care to avoid breaking the pumpkin shell.
Tips and Warnings
- Bake small, individual filled pumpkins for 45 minutes to 60 minutes. If you can't find sugar or pie pumpkins, you can use jack o' lantern pumpkins; However they are not as sweet and may be stringier.
