USA Gymnastics promulgates the rules for men's gymnastics in America and is the official governing body for sport in the country. That authority comes from the U.S. Olympic Committee and the Federation Internationale de Gymnastique, known as FIG. Some of the major responsibilities of USA Gymnastics include the selection and training of American teams for the Olympic Games and world championships, promoting and developing the sport across the country and serving as a resource center. Men and women have separate set of rules, although many are identical for both.
Membership
If you want to compete in a USA Gymnastics event, you must be a member of the organization. After a payment of $54, at time of publication, you will be have a member number. The membership is good for one calendar year beginning in August 1. Insurance coverage is included as a benefit of membership. Officials, coaches, judges and meet directors must join USA Gymnastics as well.
National Team
Selectors name members of the U.S. national team on the basis of the all-around competition at the national championships. The men's program committee of USA Olympics determines qualification procedures for the Olympics, Pan American Games and world championships. If you gain selection to the national team, you must comply with a number of rules governing conduct and behavior.
Junior Olympic Program
The rules for young gymnasts are set forth for the USA Gymnastics Junior Olympic program, which offers training and events for beginner to elite gymnasts from the ages of 6 to 18. Training and competitions occur at the local, regional and national level. The Junior Olympics program teaches young gymnasts basic skills and runs age group competitions.
USA Gymnastics rules set forth a number of proficiency levels a beginning gymnast must climb before he begins competing. The rules that govern the junior national team program set forth the objectives and selection procedures for choosing elite junior gymnasts for the Future Stars, Junior National Team and Junior Elite Team. The Junior Nation team program prepares America's best young male gymnasts to compete against the best in the world.
Conduct
USA Gymnastics sets forth strict rules of conduct for its national team members. They are asked to make every effort to cooperate with fellow gymnasts, team coaches and officials, international officials, foreigners, local organizing committees and other people such as hotel clerks. The rules do not allow variations in training apparel and shoes, competitive apparel, warm-up suits, shirts or emblems, which can incur expulsion from the team.
