Pilates -- the Joseph Pilates-created method of exercising with slow and precise movements -- can help you strengthen muscle using very little weight. A typical Pilates class will have no more than a mat, a ball and some straps for equipment, with the occasional Reformer machine for advanced users. Because of the reduction in equipment, Pilates often uses your own body and complicated positions for resistance. This means you'll contort your body into various positions, which can be uncomfortable and revealing in the wrong type of clothing.

Tops

Wearing simply cut and modest shirts in Pilates class is helpful. While moving your body around in various positions, you could make yourself and others uncomfortable if your shirt is low-cut or revealing. Instead, look for shirts that fit like form-fitting traditional T-shirts. While loose tops are certainly comfortable, they don't allow your instructor to see your form, which is imperative during Pilates. When you shop for Pilates clothes, try them on and move around into a variety of positions to ensure your clothing stays in place and is comfortable.

Bottoms

Flowing, loose pants may seem like a good idea for exercising, but they can cause problems when using a Reformer. Since a Reformer machine is outfitted with straps and springs, loose pants can become caught during exercise. Loose pants also make it hard for your instructor to correct your form in class. Remedy the problem by sticking with tight-fitting leggings or shorts. When wearing shorts, avoid those that are shorter than mid-thigh, since you'll be performing exercising with your legs open and in various positions.

Footwear

Pilates is traditionally performed in bare feet. If you feel uncomfortable in bare feet, it's fine to practice in socks. Just remember that you'll need as much stability as possible when in various positions, and socks could make you slip. If you wear socks, try to find nonslip exercise socks or opt for a sticky mat to help create traction between your feet and the floor. When you're barefoot, a traditional yoga or Pilates mat is best.

Undergarments and Accessories

Your foundation garments can help you feel more comfortable in Pilates class. Look for a supportive sports bra with few seams to minimize irritation. When choosing underwear, remember that you'll be in various positions that may cause lines to show. Look for fit and comfort level over style when you're dressing for Pilates.

When practicing Pilates, ensure that you have as little distraction as possible. It's a method of exercise that requires focus and concentration, so wearing loud or loose jewelry could affect your technique. If possible, wear your hair in a ponytail or otherwise clipped out of your face so it's not a distraction.
