Basketball drills to shoot like a college player are designed to help improve your mechanics and fluidity while shooting a basketball. While basic fundamentals are as important to collegiate athletes as they are novice ballplayers, certain shooting drills against defenders are more common in college basketball then a basic pickup game.
Catch and Shoot
Catch-and-shoot drills are designed to help you develop a rhythm while shooting the ball on the move. Due to the improved defense in college basketball, creating your own shot while shooting on the move is essentially to scoring at the next level. Stand where the baseline meets the three-point line. Have a partner stand in between the three-point line and the foul line with a ball. Start the drill by catching a pass and shooting from the corner, just behind the three-point line. Have your partner retrieve the shot while you move three steps sideways. Catch the ball while moving and take another shot. Continue to move and shoot until you have gone around the entire three-point line.
Two-Minute Drill
Two-minute shooting drills are designed to simulate an end-of-game scenario where you must make a clutch shot. This situation will help you develop accuracy in the clutch. Start directly under the hoop with a ball in your hand. On your coach's whistle, start by making a layup in front of the hoop. Grab your own rebound and dribble to the foul line. Take a shot from here. If you make it, grab the rebound and head out to the top of the key. If you miss, keep shooting until you make it. Once you make a shot from the top of the key, take a shot from the top of the three point line. Once you have made all these shots, begin shooting free throws. Make as many free throws as you can before time runs out.
10-Spot Shooting Drill
In college basketball, it is important to be able to shoot from all different parts of the court. Ten-spot shooting drills will help you get familiar with different looks on the court. Mark five spots on each side of the basket that you would commonly shoot from. Mark them with either a cone or a sticker. Start at the cone closest to the baseline. Take a shot from this point. Grab your own rebound, moving to the cone that is second closest to the baseline. Continue to move out and around until you have shot from all 10 points.
Shot Fake
In order to gain separation from a defender in college basketball, it is important to develop a pump fake that will give you room to shoot. Stand in between the baseline and three-point line with a defender in front of you. Transition into a triple threat stance and wait for your coach's whistle. On his whistle, pump fake by extending your arms out as if to shoot the ball. Bring the ball back in to your set position before performing a jump shot. If the defender does not fall for your fake, perform another pump fake. After shooting, get your own rebound and take another shot from wherever you grab the rebound. Perform 10 shots with pump fakes before stopping.
