Once you've made the cheerleading squad, prepare for a rigorous schedule of practices, games and events and even competition with other squads. For each various event in which you participate, you may need a different type of attire or uniform. By always being correctly dressed for the sport, you ensure that you can move freely and coordinate with the rest of the squad members. You may need to purchase various uniforms, but some outfits and components may be supplied for you.
Practice
When heading to a cheer practice, nearly anything goes so long as it's approved by your cheer coach and the organization for which you cheer. In general, any type of clothing that allows you to move freely is acceptable. Cheer shorts, which are shorter than typical shorts and tank tops or crop tops are common, since they allow maximum movements with the ability to see the lines of the body. Avoid clothing that is too large, as it can catch and become a liability during stunting and tumbling.
Events and Performances
When cheering at regular games and events, high school and college cheerleader uniforms must conform to National Federation of High School Associations and National Cheerleaders Association rules. Generally, it means that your midriff must be covered when your hands are at your sides, that skirt lengths are longer than 12 inches and that uniforms are generally modest in appearance. While female cheerleaders may wear sleeveless uniforms, male cheerleaders must have short sleeves. Your organization will likely supply your uniform, but it will be up to you to maintain and bring your uniform for games and events.
Competition
While competition uniforms must still adhere to NFHS and NCA rules regarding costumes, competition gear tends to be flashier than regular game gear. Your organization may differentiate between the two to keep your competition uniform in better condition than plain event uniforms. When attending a cheer competition, you'll also likely wear extra makeup and hair accessories to make your squad look more eye-catching to the various judges.
Overall Appearance
Your overall appearance as a cheerleader should be neat and clean. Bot the NCA and NFHS have strict rules regarding jewelry and hair. Your hair should always be pulled back if long enough and jewelry is only allowed if medically necessary. If you do have to wear medical jewelry, it should be taped to your skin to avoid injury. You'll need to wear athletic shoes and not dance slippers. As a cheerleader, you're often responsible for the overall impression of an organization, so wear clothes and present yourself in a manner that represents the school or organization in a favorable light.
