Arthroscopic surgery is an orthopedic procedure that aids with diagnosing, treating and visualizing joint problems. Arthroscopy involves inserting a light with magnifying camera inside your joint. Rehabilitation exercises after arthroscopic surgery restore the affected joint's supporting muscle strength and increase flexibility. Exercises vary according to joint and individual injury, so check with your doctor first.

Wrist Flexing

Increasing your wrist flexibility plays a major role during rehabilitation exercises for wrist arthroscopic surgery. Surgery can help relieve symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome, according to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. Do some gentle flexing maneuvers known as wrist bends to increase your wrist joint range of motion. Stand or sit and extend your surgical arm in front of you. Keep your elbow straight. Place your nonsurgical hand over the top of your surgical-side hand and fingers, according to Hep2go.com. Gently push down on your surgical hand until you feel a mild stretch in your wrist area. Hold the stretch for 10 seconds. Slowly return to the original position. Relax 10 seconds. Repeat the exercise 10 times.

Knee Flexing

Rehabilitation exercises after arthroscopic surgery help restore functioning to a chronically or acutely damaged ACL, anterior cruciate ligament, in your knee. Stretching out your quadriceps, your knee joint's largest supporting muscle, will work on restoring flexibility to your knee area after surgery. Stand facing a wall and place your opposite-side hand onto the wall, palm open. Gently lift your surgical-side foot and bring your heel toward your buttock. Increase the stretch by grasping your ankle with your same-side hand. Stretch as far as possible without causing undue pain. Hold the stretch for 10 seconds. Slowly return your leg to standing position. Relax 10 seconds. Repeat the exercise five times.

Shoulder Area Strengthening

Arthroscopic surgery can help treat various levels of rotator cuff tears in the shoulder joint. Strengthen your shoulder area by doing some isometric rehabilitation exercises after arthroscopic shoulder surgery. Stand with your surgical arm against a wall, according to Hep2go.com. Bend your elbow to a 90-degree angle, palm facing away from the wall. Roll up a towel and place it between the wall and lower forearm area, cushioning your elbow. Gently push your elbow into the towel. Hold tension for 10 seconds. Release tension and relax 10 seconds. Repeat the exercise 10 times.

Table Pushing Maneuver

Rehabilitation exercises after arthroscopic surgery play a major role in strengthening and stretching your elbow area after surgery has removed loose bone fragments. Start doing some standing table pushups. Stand facing an exercise table, or other firm table. Place your feet close together. Gently lean your upper body forward and place your hands onto the table, palms open wide, elbows straight, according to Hep2go.com. Keep your feet firmly on the floor and slowly bend your elbows while lowering your upper body toward the table. Hold the position for five seconds. Slowly straighten your elbows while pushing your body back to the leaning position. Relax 10 seconds. Repeat the exercise 10 times.
