Certain foods help create an alkaline state in the body, neutralizing stomach acids and relieving acidosis, according to Felicia Drury Kliment in her book "The Acid Alkaline Balance." Eating high quantities of animal protein and fats, fast foods and processed foods may produce an overly acidic state, not only in the stomach, but also in the bloodstream. Adding foods to your diet to help reduce acidity may improve your overall health. Speak to your health practitioner before changing your diet.
Alfalfa Sprouts
Alfalfa sprouts have a highly alkaline pH when consumed raw and will contribute to neutralizing an overly acidic state, says Kliment. They are best eaten raw. Add them as a garnish to salads or mix the raw sprouts into cooked casseroles for some added crunch. Use organic sprouts if you want to minimize exposure to pesticides or chemicals. You can make your own sprouts in a jar on your windowsill so you always have a fresh supply on hand.
Cream of Tartar
When you want to raise the pH of your stomach quickly, one of the best substances you can use is cream of tartar, according to Dr. Theodore Baroody in his book "Alkalize or Die." He recommends mixing 1/2 tsp. with 8 oz. water when you have an emergency and need fast action to neutralize stomach acids. If you are experiencing a severe headache, nausea, vomiting or shock, cream of tartar in water may help stabilize you and relieve symptoms.
Raw Foods
Most fruits, vegetables and herbs have an alkaline pH and are helpful in keeping the stomach in a less acidic state when eaten fresh and raw, according to Kliment. Cooking any food causes it to lose much of its alkalinity; however, it is still better for your digestion to eat cooked fruits and vegetables than to consume acid-forming processed foods and animal products. If you do cook the fruits and vegetables, steam them to maintain as many nutrients as possible. Raw fruits and vegetables contain high quantities of natural enzymes that help the digestive process and may prevent acidosis.
High-Potassium Foods
Eating foods high in potassium may prevent an overly acidic state in the stomach, says Baroody. High-potassium foods help produce an alkaline state in the stomach and bloodstream, contributing to better overall health, he adds. Some of the high-potassium foods he recommends are raw honey, apple cider vinegar, melons, ripe bananas, lemons and sweet potatoes.
