Irritable bowel syndrome, or IBS, is a disorder that affects the gastrointestinal system, particularly the large intestine. Someone with IBS typically has symptoms of changes in bowel function: frequent constipation or diarrhea, abdominal pain, flatulence and bloating. Some people with IBS avoid dairy products entirely, considering them to be triggers for intestinal flare-ups. However, yogurt may be an exception to this rule, as it contains some ingredients that may help symptoms of IBS.
IBS Causes
The specific cause of IBS is unknown, but according to Temple University's School of Medicine it may occur due to varying events in the colons of those diagnosed with this condition. For some, symptoms of IBS flare up due to colonic motility; in other words, the colon moves waste at a faster or slower pace, resulting in either diarrhea or constipation. For others, IBS symptoms are the result of triggers, such as stress, food or emotions.
Lactose Intolerance
The body normally needs a specific enzyme to digest lactose, which is the sugar found in milk and most dairy products. Yogurt contains a type of bacteria that produces this enzyme. If you are unable to tolerate dairy products because of IBS symptoms, or you have lactose intolerance along with IBS, try yogurt to determine its effect on your symptoms. A dietician can help you decide what foods, including yogurt, that you can eat and what foods you should avoid.
Adding Fiber
Adding fiber to your diet also may help with symptoms of IBS. Some people suffer from chronic constipation as a result of IBS. Dietary fiber can help to regulate bowel movements. Some yogurt is specifically formulated with extra fiber and may help reduce constipation associated with IBS. Adding whole grain cereal, dried fruit or granola to yogurt to increase your fiber intake may help. The fiber helps prevent water from leaving the intestine too rapidly, thereby preventing constipation. If you have IBS, consider tracking your symptoms after adding high-fiber yogurt.
Probiotics
Some brands of yogurt contain extra probiotics that may help to reduce symptoms of IBS. Probiotics are microorganisms similar to the good bacteria found in your intestines. These bacteria promote a healthy gastrointestinal system by preventing the growth of harmful bacteria in the intestines, which can lead to infection. Probiotics may also work to regulate bowel movements by controlling how food moves through the digestive tract. Yogurt with probiotics may help reduce IBS symptoms by regulating bowel movements and reducing excess gas and bloating.
