A banana split is a classic dessert that combines bananas with ice cream, other fruits and a sauce of some sort. The layout of a banana split enables you to be creative with adding extras and personalizing the dessert, as there really isn't a wrong way to make one. Although fruit is a primary ingredient in banana splits, the end result is usually high in sugar and calories, so it is wise to eat them sparingly.

Step 1

Slice a banana in half lengthwise, down the center on the inside where the banana curves.

Step 2

Place each half along the outside of a long banana split dish.

Step 3

Set three scoops of vanilla ice cream down the middle of the dish, so they hold the sliced banana in place.

Step 4

Pour your favorite sauce on top of each scoop. Chocolate, strawberry and caramel are common choices. Use a different sauce for each scoop, if you prefer.

Step 5

Scatter additional fruit such as sliced strawberries, raspberries or blueberries over top of the ice cream and sides and ends of the dish.

Step 6

Add a swirl of whipped cream to the top of each scoop of ice cream. Sprinkle on chopped nuts and top with maraschino cherries, if you like.

Tips and Warnings

  • Modify your use of sauces or fruits to suit your taste. Replace the ice cream with vanilla yogurt and omit the sauce and whipped cream for a healthier treat. Serve the banana split in any shape of bowl and pile the ingredients as you like if a standard banana split dish is unavailable. Use a fruit reduction in place of the sauces for a different flavor and texture. Use any flavor of ice cream, or a different flavor for each scoop, if you prefer.
