Flag football is a scaled-down version of traditional outdoor American football, only without the hitting and pads. There are only seven players per team on the field at once, with teams typically using only three players on the offensive line and none on the defensive line. The personnel the offense has on the field for each play dictates how a man-to-man defense lines up, but each defensive position has a general set of guidelines on how to play man-to-man defense in flag football.

Step 1

Line up a cornerback across the line of scrimmage from each wide receiver. There can be anywhere from one to three wide receivers, and in man-to-man defense, each cornerback is responsible for covering one wide receiver. Unlike in a zone defense, as a cornerback you stick to your man as he runs his route, instead of passing off the wide receiver to a defensive teammate.

Step 2

Use one linebacker for every lineman the offensive team uses. In a typical flag football game, the offense has three linemen, so your team should use three linebackers in a triangular formation. The front two linemen should rush the passer, while the third lineman stays in coverage to help on short routes or running plays.

Step 3

Keep one free safety behind the linebackers. The safety directs the defensive players and can play shallow or deep depending on whether you want the offense to think you are defending the run or the pass. The assignment of the safety is to mirror where the quarterback is going to throw the ball, helping out on short passing plays or helping out deep if a wide receiver breaks free from a cornerback.

Tips and Warnings

  • Make sure to communicate in man-to-man defense, as the offense may try to have the wide receivers run screens or have offensive linemen release as a receiver.
