Much controversy exists regarding the role of vitamins and minerals in preventing Alzheimer's disease. A healthy diet -- one that incorporates all the essential nutrients -- is still a foundation for healthy living, but after age 50, doctor's recommend supplements. Supplements are especially important for those who are at risk for Alzheimer's and other diseases. Talk to your doctor about the best supplements for you.

About Alzheimer's Disease

Alzheimer's is a progressive brain disease, which affects approximately 5.4 million people, according to 2011 facts and figures presented by the Alzheimer's Association. Although the exact causes aren't clear, doctors recommend precautionary measures to reduce the risk of cognitive decline. Examples include regular exercise and maintaining a healthy diet and weight. Controlling cholesterol levels might also help, as high cholesterol levels are associated with arteriosclerotic vascular disease -- a disease related to heart disease and stroke, which are primary factors in neurological deterioration.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is a fat-soluble, antioxidant vitamin. Vitamin E intake, whether from food or supplements, is shown to protect against mental decline, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Subsequent studies present conflicting evidence, however. It's unclear whether vitamin E is indeed effective for preventing cognitive deterioration and Alzheimer's disease. Talk to your doctor about the potential side effects and risks before using vitamin E.

B Vitamins

The UMMC reports that deficiencies in vitamin B-6, vitamin B-12 and folate may increase risks of Alzheimer's's disease, due to increased homocysteine levels -- the levels of amino acids in the body. Alzheimer's Treatment.org calls vitamin B-12 and folate "brain protective agents," due to their effectiveness at controlling homocysteine levels. Nevertheless, no strong evidence concludes that the supplements actually prevent Alzheimer's disease. Consult your doctor before using these vitamins.

Multivitamins

A multivitamin is a supplement that contains a variety of essential vitamins and minerals in a single pill. People who want to increase their health by filling in nutritional gaps and reduce their risk of developing Alzheimer's disease might use a multivitamin to do so. The best products are standardized and carry the NSF International mark of safety. Other quality products are made by participants in the U.S. Pharmacopeia's Dietary Supplement Verified Program.
