Lifelong treatment is required for the chronic condition known as schizophrenia. There is no cure for the condition and treatments are necessary during periods of no or little symptoms. Good nutrition, sleep, hygiene and psychotherapy help with treatment of schizophrenia. Sometimes hospitalization is necessary for the patient's wellbeing. According to the MayoClinic.com, antipsychotics are the most common prescribed medication for treatment of schizophrenia. Patients are reluctant to use medication due to its unpleasant side effects, researchers look into natural treatments to aid in the standard medication such a theanine supplements.

Theanine

Theanine is a non-protein amino acid mostly found in green tea. Theanine induces the release of GABA in the brain, which is a neurotransmitter. It helps trigger the release of dopamine in the brain. According to Dr. Jonny Bowden, author of "Most Effective Natural Cures on Earth," theanine is helpful in improving mood and decreasing anxiety. The book recommends 200 mg of theanine daily in capsule or tablet form. This cannot replace standard medication for schizophrenia, thus discuss using theanine with your doctor prior to self-treating your condition.

Schizophrenia

People suffering from schizophrenia may have auditory and visionary hallucinations. These symptoms often start in the late teens and young adults in men. In women, symptoms usually start in the mid 20s to early 30s. Other symptoms include disorganized speech, unusual thoughts, problems with concentration, and difficulty expressing or showing emotion. There is no singular cause of schizophrenia, but genetics and environmental factors play a role. With treatments and a healthy lifestyle, some people with the condition live a productive life.

Research

Studies conducted to show the effectiveness of theanine in treating schizophrenia have shown positive results. "The Journals of Clinical Psychiatry" have published results of a clinical study in 2010 of theanine effectiveness in relieving symptoms of anxiety in patients suffering from schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder. The study concluded that theanine positively affects the symptoms of anxiety in individuals suffering from schizophrenia. Professor Michael S. Ritsner and colleagues support theanine as an effective supplement to help manage anxiety in schizophrenia. Theanine cannot replace standard medication and may interact with your prescription. Consult a doctor before using theanine to help manage the condition.

Considerations

In addition to medication and supplements like theanine, support is vital in managing schizophrenia; joining support groups and learning more about the condition will help the sufferer gain insight into his own behavior. Theanine is only proven to help manage anxiety, which is a symptom of schizophrenia. There are several other symptoms associated with the illness, and supplements cannot replace standard medication. Discuss using theanine or any other supplement with your doctor due to the adverse effect it can have with prescribed anti-anxiety medication.
