Psyllium husk soluble fiber is an herbal supplement sold over the counter and is most commonly used as a natural laxative. Psyllium husk is grown all over the world but is primarily harvested in Asian countries. Psyllium may be used to treat constipation because it helps absorb liquid in your intestines and add bulk to your stool. Before using this supplement, talk with your doctor. Chronic diarrhea or constipation may be a sign of a more serious condition that needs to be assessed by your physician. If you experience any unpleasant side effects from the supplement, stop use until you can be seen by your doctor.
Psyllium Soluble Fiber
Fiber is divided into two categories: soluble and insoluble. Soluble fiber is the portion of food that is not broken down during digestion and absorbs liquid, causing a gel-like substance to form that helps regulate bowel movements, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Insoluble fiber does not absorb water during digestion and helps to regulate bowel movements, but does not soften stool. Psyllium may be used to treat constipation or diarrhea. It may also be used to help regulate blood sugar levels if you have diabetes.
Uses
Although psyllium husk soluble fiber is mostly used to help regulate bowel movements, it may be used for other health-related purposes. Do not use psyllium husk to prevent or treat any medical condition without first talking with your health-care provider. The University of Maryland Medical Center states that the supplement is commonly used to prevent and treat colon cancer, constipation, diarrhea, diabetes, heart disease, hemorrhoids, high blood pressure, inflammatory bowel disease and high cholesterol.
Side Effects
Psyllium husk may cause gastrointestinal side effects when you begin using the product. Increasing your daily intake of fiber at a fast rate can cause gas, bloating, stomach pain, nausea and diarrhea, according to MedlinePlus. To avoid these adverse reactions, slowly increase the amount of psyllium husk you ingest daily. Because psyllium develops into a gel-like substance, it may cause choking if you don't ingest enough water with the supplement. MedlinePlus recommends drinking at least 8 oz. of water for every 7 g of the seed.
Allergy Concern
Drugs.com warns that psyllium husk supplements may cause an allergic reaction. Common symptoms of an allergic reaction to the supplement include shortness of breath, chest tightness, coughing, wheezing, trouble breathing, facial swelling, stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, headache, sinus pressure, hives, skin rashes and itchy skin. If you develop an increased heart rate, you cannot breathe or your blood pressure drops, call 911.
