Making hair strong and healthy is a goal of most women. Excessive processing and environmental factors, such as dyeing, perms, using harsh chemical styling products and sun exposure can all damage hair and make it weak. Achieving healthy, beautiful hair might take some work, but the effects are worth it.
Step 1
Eat the right foods to strengthen hair. Adding biotin to your diet will start to strengthen hair from the inside out. Biotin can be found in walnuts, soy products, eggs, fish, sunflower seeds and brown rice. Foods high in vitamins A, C and E, protein, calcium and omega-3 fats also help build strong, healthy hair.
Step 2
Apply a protein treatment to hair, such as Redken Extreme Deep Fuel or Frederic Fekkai Protein Rx Reparative Treatment Mask, to reverse damage and smooth out strands. These can be used once a week to once a month, depending on the level of damage.
Step 3
Shampoo and condition hair with hair-strengthening products that include ingredients such as hydrolysed rice protein, soy protein, panthenol, vitamin E and vitamin B5. Use a scalp-stimulating or clarifying shampoo four to eight times a month to help keep hair healthy and strong. These shampoos gently encourage new growth at the roots by ridding the scalp of buildup that might be blocking hair follicles.
Step 4
Choose a leave-in conditioner or a deep conditioner to be used once or twice a week in place of your regular conditioner. Deep conditioners are rinsed out, like normal conditioners, but are applied for a longer time. Leave-in conditioners are not rinsed out, but left on the hair to continue strengthening it as you go about your daily routine.
Step 5
Add natural hair strengtheners to your beauty regimen. Virgin coconut oil, coconut milk and peach seed oil are oils you can use at home to strengthen weak hair. Apply these directly to damp hair before or after shampooing. A weekly rinse of 1 cup vinegar and sage diluted with 3 cups water can also encourage strong new growth.
Step 6
Protect your hair from future damage. Chemicals and high heat can quickly destroy all of the hard work you've put into making your hair strong and healthy. Try giving hair a break every once in a while and letting it dry naturally instead of using a blow dryer and heated curling iron.
