Metoprolol Side Effects

Used to treat conditions such as high blood pressure, heart failure, atrial fibrillation and migraines, metoprolol is a beta-blocker---a medication prescribed to help lower blood pressure. While 78 percent of patients taking metoprolol believe its benefits outweigh the risks, 24 percent wish they knew more about the drug before using it.

Side Effects to Expect

When you begin taking metoprolol, you can expect to experience certain side effects. In many cases, these side effects begin to ease after a short period of time. They include feeling short of breath, developing an unexplained rash, feeling dizzy or tired, experiencing diarrhea or feeling depressed.

Report Immediately

Some patients go beyond the common and experience side effects that may result in health complications. Side effects that should be reported immediately include chest pain, confusion, inexplicable weight gain, an irregular heartbeat and fainting.

Unlikely Side Effects

Fewer than 1 percent of patients taking metoprolol experience anxiety, loss of coordination, hair loss, loss of appetite, changes in mood, heart palpitations, sexual performance problems, nasal congestion, general weakness, insomnia, heartburn or reflux.

Indications of an Allergic Reaction

According to the experts at Drugs.com, you should seek emergency medical attention if you display any signs of an allergic reaction. These include swelling of your throat, lips, face or tongue, difficulty breathing or swallowing, the sudden onset of hives or the appearance of an unexplained rash.

Take Extra Precautions

Metaprolol can impair your ability to think, drive or operate heavy machinery. Until you know how this drug will affect you, participate in these activities cautiously. Alcoholic beverages can increase this effect and make it more difficult for you to remain alert.
