Dr. Peter Gott's diet is called the No Flour, No Sugar Diet, and was created for weight loss purposes. Dr. Gott is a medical doctor and a health columnist who claims that cutting flour and sugar from your diet will help you drop unwanted pounds. Always talk with your own doctor before beginning a new weight-loss program.

How It Works

The No Flour, No Sugar Diet isn't as restrictive as many other diet programs and works by eliminating flour-based foods and those that contain added sugar. You don't have to count calories, but Dr. Gott does offer a list of foods that you should emphasize and those that you should avoid. The diet doesn't work in phases and is one that you can use to guide a healthy lifestyle long-term.

Foods

Unlike many diet programs, the No Flour, No Sugar Diet does not require you to buy prepared foods, and it allows you to choose from a large variety of allowed items. Emphasis is on whole grains, fruits, vegetables, legumes, lean meats and low-fat dairy. Avoid bread, bagels, cereal, pizza, doughnuts, cake and cookies. In addition, Dr. Gott has published several cookbooks with recipes that take the guesswork out of choosing foods that fit within the diet program. Reading labels is important to ensure that you are not eating something that has hidden sources of flour and added sugars.

Exercise

A good diet plan should include a healthy amount of exercise each day. Dr. Gott recommends 30 minutes of physical activity each day. Getting enough exercise helps you burn calories for weight loss. Choosing an activity you enjoy will increase your motivation and help you stick with it until you reach your weight loss goals. Exercise and staying at a healthy weight will also protect you from several health conditions, including diabetes and heart disease. Always talk with your doctor before beginning a new exercise routine.

Considerations

Dr. Gott's No Flour, No Sugar Diet is a healthy approach to weight loss because it focuses on nutrient-dense foods that are low in fat and calories. However, the program does not require counting calories, which could hinder your weight loss goals if you underestimate your intake. Keeping track at the outset will help you get an idea of your daily calorie intake so you are better able to control consumption. In addition to aiding in weight loss, Dr. Gott's diet can help you reduce your cravings for sugar and flour and plan for long-term weight loss success.
