If you want to bake French fries in a few minutes, buy medium-sized potatoes and slice them yourself. By the time it takes for your oven to preheat, you can cut your potatoes into French fries. When your golden fries are finished baking, season them however you like. Homemade, baked French fries are low in fat and provide you with 27.4 g of carbohydrates per average-sized potato, a perfect pre-workout side dish. This recipe serves four.

Step 1

Preheat the oven to 450 degrees F.

Step 2

Wash four potatoes using a vegetable brush and set aside on a paper towel.

Step 3

Peel the skin from the potatoes use a paring knife. Discard the skin.

Step 4

Place each potato on a cutting board and cut each lengthwise into thin slices, about 1/4-inch thick. Stack several slices together and make cuts along the width of about 1/4 inch.

Step 5

Move the freshly cut fries into a colander. Rinse the potatoes under cool tap water. Let the water strain out from the colander and set aside.

Step 6

Wash your hands and place the clean fries from the colander into a mixing bowl. Add 2 tbsp. olive oil and toss the fries with your hands. It might not seem as though the 2 tbsp. of olive oil is enough, but it is plenty. Too much oil increases cooking time.

Step 7

Arrange the fries on a baking pan and bake for 20 minutes, turning them over with a spatula about 10 minutes into baking. For crispier fries, bake the fries for 15 minutes, turning them over about at about seven or eight minutes and place the baking pan under the broiler for three minutes.

Tips and Warnings

  • Season the fries while they are hot and somewhat oily. Sprinkle salt, pepper, onion salt or oregano for taste. In a clean, empty salt shaker, combine the following: 1 tbsp. of pepper, onion salt and oregano, and 3 tbsp. of garlic salt. This is a homemade French fry seasoning that will complement your homemade fries.
