No Impact
Running can cause a lot of impact on your ankles, knees, hips and back. Over the course of time, this excessive impact can take its toll on your joints and increase your risk for arthritis. Elliptical machines, on the other hand, cause no impact whatsoever. This makes them a safe machine to use when you want to get a good workout without risking the integrity of your joints.
High Recruitment
To operate an elliptical machine, you place your feet on the platforms and move them in an arcing motion. If you use one with the movable handles, you can target muscles in your upper and lower body at the same time. When you do this, you are simulating a cross-country skiing motion. This leads to a high muscle recruitment. You can also get an efficient workout in a short amount of time.
Momentum
To use an elliptical machine, you need to get some momentum to move the platforms and handles. This can be difficult for some people who do not already possess higher levels of strength.
Not Sport Specific
Even though elliptical machines can offer you a good workout, there is a major drawback. They are not specific to regular walking and running patterns. This can especially be seen if you run races or play a sport that involves a lot of running. Training on an elliptical machine will not get your body adapted to the demands that will be placed upon it during competition.
Bone Strength
Building strong bones is pivotal to prevent osteoporosis as you age. This can be done through weight-bearing exercise. Unfortunately, when you work out on an elliptical machine, there is no stress being placed on the bones to make them stronger.
