Running burns calories, strengthens the legs and improves overall cardiovascular function, but with the proper running attire your workout becomes restricted and uncomfortable. The wrong shoes or clothing contributes to injuries in some cases. The weather and your personal preferences help you choose the best clothing for each running session.
Weather
The weather plays a major role in the clothing you choose for running. In hot weather, your clothes need to keep you cooler to avoid overheating. A baseball hat or visor and sunglasses provide additional protection from the heat and bright sun. Cold-weather running requires warmer clothing to protect your skin from freezing temperatures. Layering your running clothes allows you to adjust the coverage as you warm up during a winter run. Wear running tights to cover your legs and a long-sleeved shirt covered with a windbreaker jacket. As your body warms up, you can remove the jacket if necessary. Also wear a hat and gloves to protect your extremities and prevent heat loss from your head.
Material
Synthetic materials typically work better for running because they are better able to draw moisture away from the body. Wicking the sweat away from your skin keeps you feeling drier during your run. Dry skin is less likely to chafe from running against your clothing as you run. Cotton is often less appealing to runners because it tends to stay wet. You also want fabric that is stretchy and non-restricting so you are able to get your full range of motion while running.
Style
The cut and fit of your running attire affects your comfort level and performance. Shirts with high collars may feel uncomfortable around your neck while you run. During warm weather, tank tops keep the collar away from your neck and eliminate sleeves that may restrict your arm movements. Both long and short sleeved shirts made from stretchy material also work well for running. On the bottom, shorts, capris and full pants or running tights are an option, depending on the temperature and personal preference.
Footwear
You need suitable socks and running shoes for comfortable running. Choose socks made from synthetic material that wicks away the sweat to reduce blisters and discomfort. Some running socks offer a thin layer of padding at the heel or arch support bands built into the fabric for increased comfort. The running shoes should support your arch and running stride. The way your foot hits the ground helps determine the best shoe option. Have a gait analysis performed at a running store to determine the types of shoes that work best for your stride.
Safety
The clothing you choose for running affects your safety. No matter what time of day you run, stay visible, particularly to motorists. Wear clothing that is bright and contrasts with your surroundings so others see you. For a run in the dark, wear reflective clothing or clip on a safety light so drivers see you. Visibility is also a concern if you run in remote areas during hunting season. Choose bright colors so hunters don't mistake you for an animal as you run.
