Football is a game of strength, skill and technique. Each player on the field has his own rules, role and set of responsibilities for defensive and offensive plays. To play football well, figure out which player position best matches your physical capabilities as well as physical limitations. Speak with a coach or athletic trainer to get advice on how to improve your offensive and defensive skills as well as additional advice regarding your position of choice.
Step 1
Practice until you are you are efficient at throwing, catching and running with the football as well as blocking passes or making tackles.
Step 2
Study and memorize the playbook. If playing football for fun, become familiar with common football plays such as the pass, running routes and quarterback sneaks.
Step 3
Learn your role by becoming familiar with all of the duties that come with your role on the field.
Each player on the field is responsible for certain duties. A fullback, for example, helps to protect the running back as well as protect the quarterback.
Step 4
Familiarize yourself with the game by learning key terms, techniques and rules. These include such things as how many downs are allowed per ball possession or how to cause a fumble.
Step 5
Play with a coach or a friend and pass the ball or work on tackling techniques. Ask for a critique on your skills as well as areas that may need improvement.
Step 6
Spend 30 minutes or more lifting weights and/or performing cardio workouts like running on a treadmill or swimming. Football is a sport that requires stamina.
