Indigestion is commonly referred to as an upset stomach or dyspepsia, according to the Mayo Clinic. Indigestion refers to a collection of symptoms such as bloating, nausea and pain in the abdominal area, but it is not an overall condition. The mint family of herbs may relieve indigestion. Though there are nearly 25 different species of mint, the most commonly cultivated herbs in the mint family are peppermint and spearmint. Additional herbs include lemon balm, basil, sage, rosemary and thyme.
Use
One of the primary uses of mint is as a digestant, states Micheal Murray in "The Encyclopedia of Healing Foods." Peppermint and spearmint oil reduces spasms of the gastrointestinal tract, and relaxes smooth muscle. According to Murray, once the intestines relax and no longer spasm, the chance of indigestion occurring greatly decreases. The menthol found in the oil of mint may be the reason for the relaxation effect. Peppermint may ease the flow of bile in the stomach, and allow food to pass through the stomach quickly, states the University of Maryland Medical Center.
Types
Enteric-coated peppermint capsules ensure the mint is passed into the intestines before the capsule dissolves and directly coats the intestines when indigestion occurs. Mint may also be consumed by simply chewing on a raw mint leaf. Drying the leaves and creating an herbal tea is another way to consume mint for indigestion. To create peppermint tea, add ¼ cup of dried tea leaves to 4 cups of hot water. Allow to sit for 15 minutes and sweeten with honey, if desired.
Safety Concerns
Drinking even a lot of peppermint tea is generally safe, states the University of Maryland Medical Center. Still, consuming mint is not recommended if you suffer from gastroesophageal reflux disease or a hiatal hernia. The mint may relax the smooth muscle surrounding the sphincter between the stomach and throat, causing stomach acid to back up into the throat. If you are taking medications to fight stomach acid, it is important to take peppermint two hours before or after medications.
Additional Mint Uses and Tips
When choosing fresh mint, look for vibrant green leaves free from yellow or brown spotting. Choose organically grown mint when purchasing the dried version. Organic mint is less likely to have received radiation to remove pests, states Murray. Keep dried mint in an airtight container placed in a cool and dry place. Dried mint stays fresh between nine and twelve months.
