All of the strength and cardio training you do in the gym will not help you lose fat if you do not follow a healthy diet. However, some may wish to decrease their metabolic rate in order to gain weight. There are plenty of foods that contain little nutrient value, but pack a massive sugar, fat and calorie punch.
Simple Carbohydrates
Simple carbohydrates are different from complex carbohydrates because they take less time to digest, and they release insulin quickly. If this insulin is not used in the form of energy, it will be stored as body fat in your adipose tissue. White breads and rice, as well as croissants, cakes, pastries and refined pasta, all encourage weight gain and stifle a fast metabolism.
Sugar Substitutes
Sugar substitutes may seem like the obvious option for dieters who have a sweet tooth. While they do have fewer calories than sugar, some of the ingredients in artificial sweeteners can cause bloating and digestive difficulties. If you must eat something that contains sugar or use for cooking, use a smaller amount of the real thing, and control your portion sizes.
High Fructose Corn Syrup
According to Princeton University researchers, foods and beverages containing high fructose corn syrup may promote more body fat storage than sugar. This contributes to an obesity epidemic and will not increase your metabolic rate. Non-diet sodas, fruit juices and processed foods contain the most high fructose corn syrup.
Fried Foods
Fried foods promote an increase of body fat. They contain little nutrient value and are packed with saturated fat and calories. Fast food burgers and fries, chicken, vegetables, fish and eggs that are fried promote weight gain, however too much may contribute to artery plaque and high cholesterol.
