In the United States, consumers are entitled by law (the Fair and Accurate Transactions Act--also known as the FACT Act) to receive a free credit report from each of the three credit bureaus (TransUnion, Equifax and Experian) every year. Consumers may utilize these credit reports to review credit scores, to prevent or spot identity theft, and to make sure their credit reports are accurate and free of errors. Credit scores are important, as they determine how creditworthy you are, and whether or not you may qualify to receive anything from a new credit card line to a mortgage loan. Understanding how to receive free copies of a credit report every year helps consumers stay on top of their credit history and guide them into making wise and effective decisions regarding their credit and loan information.

Step 1

Access AnnualCreditReport.com for a copy of your credit report from all three credit bureaus; TransUnion, Equifax and Experian. Individuals accessing the website may receive a copy of their credit report by requesting one through the mail, phone or online. Those requesting a copy of the credit report online may view the credit report immediately following identity authentication. Those requesting a copy by phone or regular mail may have to wait about 15 days to receive a copy in the mail.

Step 2

Contact Experian directly at their website at Experian.com or call their toll-free number at 1-800-397-3742 and request a copy of your credit report. Consumers may also request a copy online through links provided on the website's homepage. Users will be asked to fill in a brief order form requesting name, mailing address and email to proceed.

Step 3

Contact TransUnion via their website at Transunion.com for a free copy of a credit report. Those logging onto the site will be asked to register, providing information such as name, mailing address and the last 4 digits of their social security number. A trial membership is required, which may be cancelled within 30 days to avoid membership fees.

Step 4

Contact Equifax through their website and logging in to their Member Center to access reports or alerts. This access requires a membership, but the company suggests accessing AnnualCreditReport.com for a free copy of credit reports for those who do not wish to join or log into the Member site. Consumers may also write a request and send it to Annual Credit Report Request Service, P.O. Box 105281, Atlanta, GA 30348-5281 or by calling 1-877-322-8228.
