If you've recently started using psyllium husk and you've experienced stomachaches, call your doctor. Your stomachache may be the result of increasing your daily fiber intake but it may also be a sign of a more serious condition. Psyllium husk is an herbal supplement that is commonly used as a stool softener and laxative to treat anal fissures, hemorrhoids and patients who undergo anal surgery. In some cases the herbal supplement may be used to ease symptoms associated with diarrhea, dysentery, irritable bowel syndrome and ulcerative colitis. Talk to your doctor before using psyllium husk supplements.

Common Cause

The most common reason you would develop a stomachache after taking psyllium husk supplements is because of increased fiber intake. Whenever you increase the amount of fiber in your diet, you will most likely experience bloating, gas, stomach pain and cramping because the bacteria that live in your digestive system are not accustomed to the extra fiber. If this is the cause of your stomachache, symptoms should subside within a few days. In some cases, a stomachache may develop if you do not drink enough water while using this supplement. Without ample water, you may develop constipation, leading to stomach pain and a lack of bowel movements, according to MedlinePlus.

Digestive Conditions

While psyllium husk may improve your symptoms with certain digestive conditions, it could also trigger symptoms and make them worse. For example, if you've been diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome, psyllium husk may help regulate your bowel movement. In some people the increase in fiber may cause greater diarrhea, stomach pain and gas. Other possible digestive diseases include celiac disease and Crohn's disease. If you have a digestive disease, talk with your gastroenterologist before using this supplement.

Allergy Consideration

Drugs.com states that an allergic reaction to psyllium husk is possible. If you develop an allergic reaction you may experience stomach pain, diarrhea, vomiting, nausea and cramping shortly after you ingest the supplement. An allergic reaction will cause other symptoms to develop, such as shortness of breath, nasal congestion, skin irritations, eczema, hives, facial swelling and lightheadedness. An allergic reaction to psyllium husk may lead to a severe reaction called anaphylaxis. Have your doctor evaluate your symptoms if you suspect that you have an allergy to the supplement.

Considerations

Any sudden changes in your bowel movements or the presence of blood in your stool need to be reported to your doctor. These symptoms may be a sign of a more serious medical condition.
