Citrucel is a fiber supplement that is available for purchase at supermarkets and drugstores. It is used mainly as a laxative to treat constipation, although doctors might recommend taking it for different reasons. You should talk to your doctor before taking Citrucel, especially if you are pregnant, have difficulty swallowing, or experience nausea or stomach pain.

Forms of Citrucel

One of the benefits of Citrucel is its availability in both powder and tablet form. The original powder form is available in an orange flavor and includes a regular and a sugar-free version for diabetics. This should be taken with at least 8 oz. of cold water or juice.

The tablet form makes it more convenient to take while on the go, and is just as effective. The tablets are free from carbohydrates and are non-allergenic.

SmartFiber

SmartFiber is Citrucel's brand name of methylcellulose, a laxative that is produced from cellulose. Cellulose comes from plants and is often used as dietary fiber, since it passes through the digestive system without being digested. SmartFiber absorbs water, making stool bulkier, softer and easier to pass.

Most fibers have a way of fermenting in the large intestine. This often produces gas ranging from uncomfortable to painful. Citrucel's fiber does not ferment in your digestive system.

Fiber Intake

Although a diet rich in fruits, vegetables and grains can provide you with fiber, it can be a challenge to get up to 20 to 35 grams per day, like the American Dietetic Association recommends. Eating a fiber-rich diet and taking a fiber supplement like Citrucel can insure that you get the recommended daily intake of fiber. This can help keep you regular even if you do not have trouble with constipation.

Other Uses

Citrucel can also be used to treat diarrhea. The fiber in it absorbs excess water and keeps waste from moving too fast, lessening diarrhea symptoms. It can also be used to treat irritable bowel syndrome since the fiber in Citrucel does not ferment and cause excess gas. Waste is removed from the digestive system regularly which reduces IBS symptoms. Before treating any of these conditions with Citrucel, ask your doctor for advice.
