Making consistent, solid contact on the center of the club face is one of the most challenging aspects of golf. One of the more common off-center misses involves hitting the ball on the toe -- the spot on the club face farthest from the shaft and hosel. If you struggle with this problem, some drills will help get you back to the center of the club face to hit your shots flush.
Establish the Correct Distance From the Ball at Address
Step 1
Grip your club as you would to hit a shot. Extend your arms and club straight out in front of you. Avoid stiffness in the arms and allow the elbows to bow out slightly.
Step 2
Maintain the angle created between your arms and the club shaft as you lower the club, grounding it. Bring your hands to rest at a point just below the level of your belt buckle.
Step 3
Repeat this process using a ball. Ground the club behind the ball and position your feet. Practice hitting shots once you're comfortable with this orientation. The corrected ball/body distance should reduce shots hit on the toe.
The Two Tee Drill
Step 1
Place two tees in the ground, roughly one club head apart.
Step 2
Take your set-up position as if to hit the tee closest to you, but when you swing the club, attempt to hit the tee that's farther away.
Step 3
Extend your arms more on the downswing if you have difficulty making solid contact with the farther tee. Repeat this process until you are able to consistently hit the hit the farther tee.
Step 4
Replace the tees with golf balls. Set up as if to hit the closer ball, but when executing the shot, hit the farther ball. Repeat this process until you are able to consistently hit the farther ball and keep contact at the center of the club face.
