Vitamin B-50 supplements give you 50 mg of eight essential B vitamins, which are water soluble, so your body does not store them, and you must ingest them daily. It's best to get your vitamins from food, but the B vitamins are easily destroyed during food preparation and storage. Always consult a doctor before trying a new supplement.

General Health

You need B vitamins for good health. If you become deficient in certain B vitamins you might suffer tiredness, anemia and depression. Lack of B vitamins also might cause appetite loss, muscle cramps, abdominal pain, numbness and tingling in your arms and legs, respiratory infections, eczema and hair loss.

Thiamine, Niacin and Riboflavin

Your body needs B vitamins for metabolism and a host of other bodily functions. Many of the B vitamins work synergistically, or together. Thiamine, or vitamin B1, and riboflavin, or vitamin B2, help your body produce energy. They also are needed for enzymes important to your heart, muscles and nerves. Niacin, or B3, also helps with energy production in your cells. You need niacin for healthy digestive and nervous systems and skin. Riboflavin promotes good vision.

Biotin and Pyridoxine

Pyridoxine, or vitamin B6, and biotin, or vitamin B7, help with metabolism. B6 helps your body break proteins down and use fats. Biotin helps your body break down both protein and carbs, helps with fat synthesis and helps your body synthesize glucose. You also need B6 to promote good cognitive abilities and to maintain the health of your nervous system, immune system and red blood cells. Your body needs biotin to make hormones. Vitamin B6 helps lower your homocysteine levels, which in turn might reduce your risk of heart disease, according to Harvard Medical School. B6 assists in converting the amino acid tryptophan to niacin and serotonin. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that helps with mood, sleep and appetite.

Cobalamin, Pantothenic Acid and Folic Acid

Pantothenic acid, or vitamin B5; folic acid, or vitamin B9; and cobalamin, or vitamin B12, are necessary for normal growth and development. Folic acid also helps your body produce red blood cells and make and maintain DNA. Cobalamin helps your body use folic acid and also plays a role in producing red blood cells and maintaining your nervous system. Folic acid also helps lower your homocysteine levels, which can reduce your risk for heart disease risk, notes Colorado State University.

Considerations

Discuss B50 complex with your doctor before trying it. For example, too much niacin can lead to abnormal liver function, nausea, cramps and irritability. The upper limit for niacin is 35 mg. The upper limit for B6 is 100 mg, and the upper limit for folic acid is 1,000 mcg.
