Acne is a skin condition that affects millions of people. Cystic acne is the most severe form of the condition, causing unsightly red bumps and lesions on the skin that can cause scarring if not treated promptly. Thankfully, eating certain foods can help you regulate your cystic acne. You should always see a doctor for a proper diagnosis, however, before trying any alternative treatment plan.

Low Glycemic Index Foods

The Glycemic Index is a ranking of carbohydrates depending on how they are processed into glucose in the body. Glucose itself has a score of 100. Foods that run high on the scale include refined sugars and flour, white rice and white bread. According to a study published in the "American Journal of Clinical Nutrition" in 2007, eating low-glycemic index foods like vegetables, peanuts, fruits and brown rice can improve the condition of your skin.

Complex Carbs

Severe acne breakouts tend to occur around the time of menstruation, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. This is due to hormonal fluctuations. However, eating complex carbohydrates can help balance your hormones and prevent breakouts. Foods to consider include brown rice, oatmeal and barley.

Soy Products

To further balance out your hormones, you can try adding soy products to your diet because they contain phytoestrogens. Soy milk and tofu are popular choices.

Zinc

To improve the condition of your skin, you need to make sure you're getting enough zinc, says the University of Maryland Medical Center. Zinc that comes from animal sources like fish, poultry, cheese, green beans, tahini and miso are especially beneficial.
