Making imitation crab into fried crab cakes is a quick, scrumptious and relatively simple way to highlight this ingredient. You can combine the imitation crab with real crab meat or shrimp. However, crab cakes are delicious made with imitation crab alone. Onions, lemon juice and cayenne pepper give the imitation crab meat an extra kick. Adjust the amount of spice in the dish by reducing or increasing the amount of cayenne pepper. Imitation crab is commonly made from the white flaky fish called cod. Crab cakes -- and other types of fish cakes -- are a staple of Cajun cuisine.
Step 1
Mix together the crab meat, crushed crackers, onions, bell peppers and mayonnaise in a large bowl.
Step 2
Add the egg, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, lemon juice, salt and cayenne pepper, and combine all the ingredients with a fork. Do not overmix.
Step 3
Shape the fish cake mixture into round balls, then flatten them into 3-inch patties. Dust each side of the patties with the flour.
Step 4
Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
Step 5
Fry the crab cakes in small batches in the hot oil. Fry each side until browned, approximately four to five minutes.
Step 6
Serve the crab cakes hot, together with your favorite dipping sauce.
