Your legs and back contain a range of tissues that work together to allow proper posture and bipedal movement. Maintaining the health of tissues within your back and legs is important, since significant tissue damage can be debilitating, hindering your ability to walk or disrupting your ability to perform physical activity. A number of nutrients, such as dietary vitamins, contribute to healthy legs and a healthy back.

Vitamin D

One vitamin that can benefit your back and legs is vitamin D. Both your back and your legs contain extensive bone tissue: The vertebrae that make up your spine, long bones in your upper and lower legs, and numerous other bones that make up the jonts in your ankle, knee and hip allow for movement. Vitamin D helps to nourish these bones by regulating bone growth, and deficiencies in vitamin D can lead to a loss of bone density, which can lead to injuries in the bones of your legs and back.

Vitamin C

Another vitamin beneficial to your back and legs is vitamin C, or ascorbic acid. Many of the tissues in your legs and back -- including your bones, cartilage, tendons, muscle tissue, ligaments and blood vessels -- contain collagen, a structural protein. Vitamin C promotes the formation of new collagen within each of these tissues, helping to maintain the health of your legs and back. A deficiency in vitamin C can lead to leg or back tissue damage, and may cause joint pain that can affect your knees, ankles or hips.

B Vitamins

Consuming B vitamins can also prove important to maintaining healthy legs and a healthy back. Collectively, the eight B vitamins perform a number of roles that benefit tissues in your legs and back. They contribute to energy production to allow muscle movement, support proper nerve function throughout your body and contribute to the growth of new tissue. Deficiency in some B vitamins can affect your legs and back. For example, a vitamin B-1 deficiency can lead to leg muscle weakness and nerve damage, while a vitamin B-12 deficiency can lead to muscle spasms in your legs, according to Washington University in St. Louis.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E can also benefit the health of your legs. This nutrient may help to relieve some disorders that affect the legs, including restless leg syndrome -- a disorder characterized by an abnormal compulsion for leg movement and abnormal sensations in the legs. The NYU Langone Medical Center indicates that taking vitamin E, along with other vitamin and mineral supplements, might help to relieve restless leg syndrome, though the center notes that the effect of vitamin E has not yet been thoroughly tested. If you suffer from restless leg syndrome, talk to your doctor about the potential benefits of vitamin E in treating your condition.
