Omega-3 fatty acids make up the primary ingredient in salmon oil. Salmon oil, a form of fish oil, decreases fat in your blood stream, notes Gale Maleskey, a registered nutritionist and author of "Nature's Medicines: The Definitive Guide to health Supplements." This action of salmon oil protects you from built-up fatty plaques in your arteries. Your risks of heart attacks and stroke decrease with the consumption of salmon oil. Before starting this or any supplement, speak with your doctor and obtain his advice.

Gastric Upset

A side effect of salmon oil may occur as gastric or stomach upset, reports Drugs.com. Salmon oil may irritate the lining of your stomach, causing you to feel nauseated, primarily when you first ingest the capsules. Your body will adjust to the salmon oil supplement within a few days, in most cases. If this stomach upset continues, however, and becomes bothersome, call your medical practitioner for advice. Stop this supplement until you speak to your physician.

Belching

You may suffer from belching while your body acclimates to salmon oil capsules, Maleskey reports. Belching will occur unexpectedly at different times. Burping and belching occur because of increased gas in your intestines caused by the digestion of the salmon oil. Your doctor may suggest over-the-counter anti-gas medications for you to take. Talk to your physician if this side effect continues after a few days.

Discomfort

Salmon oil may cause discomfort in your body, Drugs.com states. Back pain caused by the salmon oil supplement will go away in a few days of use. If you suffer from back pain, omega-3 fatty acid supplements may therapeutically relieve it, as your body adjusts to the supplement, the magazine "Surgical Neurology" indicates. No etiology or beginning source is reported regarding the cause of the back pain by salmon oil in medical literature. If this side effect persists and becomes bothersome, talk to your medical practitioner. You will need to stop the supplement until you receive medical advice.

A Rash

You may experience a rash on your body when you begin taking salmon oil supplements, Maleskey reports. This minor rash may appear on your arms and legs. The reasoning for this rash was not noted in any medical documentation as of 2011. After a few days, this rash will disappear. If the rash continues or appears serious, call your doctor. Stop this supplement until your doctor has evaluated your complaint.

Umpleasant Taste

Your food may taste different as your body adjusts to the new supplement of salmon oil. Your breath may smell fish-like. Using a lozenge to soothe this non-serious side effect will help stop the bad taste in your mouth for the few days you have it.
