A scorpion is an advanced cheer stunting position that requires extensive flexibility and superior balance. In a scorpion, you use one arm to grab the opposite foot behind you. You pull that foot up toward your head, arching your body so that you form a circle with your curved arm, arched back and slightly bent leg. You must have a high degree of flexibility in your back, shoulder and quadricep. Time also must be spent mastering the art of balancing on one foot.

At the Wall

Step 1

Stand sideways near a wall with the leg you will extend closest to the wall.

Step 2

Loop a stunt strap, a nylon strap with a loop at each end, around the foot of the leg you will extend. Grab the second loop with your opposite hand.

Step 3

Place your hand on the wall for balance as you pull your foot up toward your head, wrapping the stunt strap around your head so that your hand moves closer to your foot. Lean forward slightly, keeping your head up with your eyes looking straight ahead.

Step 4

Let go of the wall, balancing in the scorpion position for at least 30 seconds.

Step 5

Work with the stunt strap until you reach the point that you can grab your foot with your hand.

On the Ground

Step 1

Stand on one foot, bending the leg you will extend behind you with its foot near your rear end.

Step 2

Grab the ankle of your bent leg with the same hand.

Step 3

Pull your leg up behind you and reach your opposite arm up and bend it back until they meet. Switch your foot from your same hand to your opposite hand.

Step 4

Allow your body to lean forward a little, and extend your free arm in a "T" motion, turning your head to look out over that hand. Balance in this position for 30 seconds.

Step 5

Repeat the same process while standing on a wobble cushion or pillow. Maintain your balance as the prop shifts and forces you to adjust.

Tips and Warnings

  • As you advance, you might be able to lift your foot behind you to be grasped by your opposite hand without using your same hand to guide it.
  • Do not attempt a scorpion position in a stunt until you can show consistent mastery of this process.
