Every action that your body takes utilizes calories, from getting out of bed in the morning to working out at the gym. The number of calories each action requires depends on what the action is, your body weight, and how long you perform the action. There is a simple equation you can use to determine how many calories you burn by traveling 3.5 miles on an elliptical.

Calories Burned

To determine how many calories you burn while using an elliptical, you must multiply the energy expenditure number by your weight in kilograms by the number of minutes you performed the exercise. The energy expenditure for elliptical exercise is 0.16. To convert your weight in pounds to kilograms, divide your weight in pounds by 2.2. For this example, assume you are a 150-pound person and it has taken you 45 minutes to work on the elliptical for an equivalent of 3.5 miles. To determine how many calories you burned, first divide 150 by 2.2 to arrive at a weight of 68.18 kilograms. Then multiply 0.16 by 68.18 by 45 to find that you burned about 491 calories on the elliptical.
