1. Choose a Certified Breast Doctor
Just because a doctor claims to be certified does not mean he obtained certification for cosmetic surgery. He may be a certified gynecologist or pediatrician. Make sure that the American Board of Medical Specialties certifies the plastic surgeon you choose for your breast augmentation. Breast implant safety starts before any surgery. Your plastic surgeon will go over your health history and discuss the best implant options for you. You should feel comfortable discussing any questions you may have about breast implant safety and the surgery. If you don't feel comfortable discussing these issues with your plastic surgeon, find another one.
2. Your Doctor Knows Best
Follow your doctor's orders after any kind of cosmetic surgery. Patients should avoid lifting heavy objects for six weeks following the procedure. They also should wear a supportive bra to help healing and breast implant safety. Regular strenuous activities, such as exercise and sex, should not resume until the plastic surgeon gives the go ahead. Many women feel fine within a week or two of the surgery, sometimes less.
3. Avoid Jobs That Impact Breast Implant Safety
If your regular job involves heavy lifting or pressing, then you may not want to get breast implants. Continued pressure on your chest can lead to problems with breast implants, including rupture and/or bleeding. Discuss your occupation with your plastic surgeon before surgery to decide if breast implants are a safe choice for you.
4. The Great Debate -- Saline vs. Silicone Implants
Saline implants were once best route when it came to breast implant safety. However, silicone implants have recently made a comeback and are now available to women over the age of 22. No matter which type of implant you choose, you should know that both pose risks of rupture and infection. The benefit of saline implants is that a rupture is noticeable more quickly than a rupture of a silicone implant, which can go undetected for several weeks or months.
5. Report Problems Immediately
If you think you may have a problem with a breast implant, contact your plastic surgeon or regular doctor right away. Hardening of the breast, tenderness or shifting implants all indicate a problem.
