An allergic reaction to vitamin C serum is unlikely, but possible. Most vitamin C supplements, whether in pill or serum form, are synthetic in nature, which could trigger a hypersensitivity of the immune system. If you have been diagnosed with other vitamin supplement allergies, discuss the use of vitamin C serum with your doctor before you ingest the product. Allergic reactions can cause minor to severe symptoms that will need to be assessed by your doctor. Stop using the serum if you experience any adverse reactions.

Cause

The allergic reaction is the result of your immune system not recognizing the ingredients in the supplement as safe. Instead of allowing the vitamin C serum to enter the body without caution, your immune system overreacts and unleashes a chemical attack against the serum. Immunoglobulin E antibodies attack the allergen, according to MedlinePlus. When the antibodies enter the blood stream, cells respond to the chemical by creating other allergen-fighting chemicals. This chain reaction leads to common allergy symptoms.

Respiratory Reactions

The respiratory system is one of the main systems in the body affected by allergic reactions. After ingesting vitamin C serum, you may develop nasal congestion and asthmatic symptoms. Inflammation in your sinuses causes excessive mucus to become trapped. The trapped mucus and extra pressure from the swollen sinus cavities causes pain throughout the head. You may not be able to breath through your nostrils. Common asthmatic symptoms may include shortness of breath, wheezing, coughing and trouble breathing, according to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology.

Digestive Complications

Tree.com states that common digestive complications associated with a vitamin allergy include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, cramping, stomach pain and bloating. As histamine levels increase in the soft tissues in your digestive system, the lining of your intestines swell, leading to common symptoms. If you notice blood in your vomit or diarrhea, call your doctor, because this may be a sign of a more serious condition.

Skin Irritation

The skin is one of the most common places to respond to an allergic reaction from vitamin C serum. General skin itching and irritation may occur or you may develop allergy rashes. Allergy rashes may include hives and eczema shortly after you take the serum. Hives appear as large or small welts in clusters that are itchy and red in color. Hives are flat on top and have defined borders. Eczema is a hypersensitivity that causes blisters to form on your skin.
