Bipolar disorder is a chronic mental disorder that requires medication for effective treatment. Antipsychotics, mood stabilizers and benzodiazepines are the most effective treatment combination. The mood stabilizer lithium is the most commonly prescribed medication to treat symptoms. HelpGuide.org, list weight gain, weakness and stomach pain as common side effects of the medication. Taurine is a promising supplement for aiding in the treatment of bipolar disorder. Adverse reactions are likely with standard medication; consult a doctor before considering use of taurine and other supplements.

Taurine

Taurine is an amino acid that helps neurological development and keeps water, mineral and salt levels regulated in the blood, according to Mayoclinic.com. Fish, meats and breast milk naturally contain taurine. Several energy drinks contain taurine to increase energy, concentration and athletic performance. Taurine is used to help people who suffer from seizures and it supports the liver in breaking down fats to produce bile.

Taurine Research

The Stanley Medical Research Institute conducted a study of taurine in adolescents with bipolar disorder in 2006. The study found that after four months, taurine effectively reduced manic symptoms in the patients. "Bipolar Disorder for Dummies," supports taurine as an effective supplement for mania. However, no research has proved that taurine should replace standard medication; consult your doctor before considering using taurine as a treatment option.

Depression

There is no evidence suggesting taurine is effective in treating depressive episodes in bipolar patients. Bipolar disorder is an illness characterized by shifts in mood affecting the individual's energy, behavior and effectiveness in performing tasks. The mood swings are labeled manic episodes and depressive episodes, according to the National Institute of Mental Health.

Bipolar Disorder Symptoms

Bipolar symptoms and the intensity of mood swings differ in each patient. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, manic symptoms include overconfidence, impulsive behavior and increased energy with few hours of sleep. Depressive symptoms include feelings of worthlessness, suicidal thoughts, lack of energy and oversleeping or insomnia. Bipolar disorders may develop in late teens and young adults and about half of cases reported are before the age of 25. Bipolar sufferers are at risk of suicide and substance abuse disorders.

Taurine Dosage & Safety

Taurine is safe, with few side effects, in the recommended dosage, and there is no evidence taurine causes withdrawal symptoms. "Prescription for Nutritional Healing," by certified nutritionist Phyllis A Balch, says taurine and other amino acids should be taken twice a day on before meals. Always consult your doctor before using taurine to help treat bipolar symptoms
