Cheerleading is a sport that requires dedication, but if you put in the time and effort, it can have quite an effect on your life. As a cheerleader you can make new friends, keep in shape, build confidence, learn to follow rules and in turn accept recognition for your hard work.

Making Friends

Cheerleading is a team sport that you can start in kindergarten and continue into adulthood. Bonds form between teammates as everyone has the same goals: to perform and win. Some cheerleaders perform with the same teammates for many years, forging long-term friendships. As a cheerleader, you also can attend summer camps to build your skills and meet people who live in areas your team might not get to.

Keeping in Shape

Cheerleading is a good way to keep your body moving and burning extra calories. The body requires healthy eating to keep up the required energy output. Working with a coach on a team makes it easier to keep in shape and look good for your body type. While cheerleading and polishing your tumbling skills, you also are learning and practicing fitness. This will have a positive effect on both your body shape and body image.

Building Confidence

American Youth Cheer encourages cheerleading as a way to boast confidence. The organization promotes the idea that it is your time to shine under the spotlight as much as the football player on the field. Cheerleading is a sport in which you can build confidence in two ways: performing with their team and, if you want, gaining more of the spotlight by doing individual stunts you have mastered.

Learning to Follow Rules

Cheerleading can be a lot of fun but, as with all sports, comes with rules and regulations. If you are participating in competitive cheerleading, you must follow the rules. American Youth Cheer oversees competitive cheerleading for youth football in the United States. In addition, local, regional, national and worldwide events incorporate their own rules. A cheerleader will learn to be knowledgeable in the rules and regulations of the sport.

Accepting Recognition

Recognition for a job well done can have a positive effect on a cheerleader and the availability for it is wide-ranged. Competition is available on the local, regional and national level. Cheerleaders also can perform at such prestigious events as the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. On the other hand, not everyone can win competitions or qualify to perform at special events. Almost every cheerleader will face rejection at some point and it can have a negative effect if you aren't prepared.
