How to Reheat Lasagna

Lasagna, a layered pasta dish traditionally made with sausage or seafood, may be the ultimate in Italian comfort food. Delicious fresh from the oven, it's possibly even better the next day, after the flavors have had a chance to meld. If you have leftovers, the Barilla pasta company recommends keeping them no longer than two days. The danger with leftover lasagna is that it will become dry, or that bacteria will have developed before it was stored in the fridge. The proper reheating method can take care of both concerns.

Step 1

Heat the oven to 350 degrees.

Step 2

Poke several holes in the leftover lasagna with a fork, especially if the lasagna seems dry.

Step 3

Drizzle a few tablespoons of milk or water over the holes to promote moisture as the lasagna reheats. Alternatively, use any extra sauce you have on hand instead of milk or water.

Step 4

Cover the lasagna dish with its lid or seal it with a piece of aluminum foil.

Step 5

Place the lasagna in the oven and bake for 20 minutes.

Step 6

Pull the lasagna out of the oven, remove the foil and use a kitchen thermometer to check the temperature in the middle of the dish. It should be at least 160 degrees.

Step 7

Put the lasagna back in the oven for 10 more minutes if the internal temperature is insufficient. The proper temperature is essential to destroy any bacteria that may be present.

Step 8

Continue to check the lasagna's temperature until it reaches 160 to 165 degrees, when it is ready to serve.

Tips and Warnings

  • Lasagna can be reheated in the microwave, but it is not a method that Barilla recommends. If you want to reheat in the microwave, put the lasagna in a microwave-safe dish, cover with plastic wrap vented at one corner, and microwave for one to two minutes, or longer for a larger serving. At the end of the cooking time, check to be sure the lasagna's internal temperature is 160 degrees.
