Soccer midfielders are among the most important players on the field. Midfielders need to display superior athletic ability, intelligence, aggressiveness and patience. Attacking Midfielders
The attacking midfielders play just behind the forwards. They are sometimes referred to as the left and right midfielders. While the attacking midfielders can score goals, they are much more likely to set up goals with accurate passes. When the passes come from the outside portion or perimeter of the field, the probing pass is called a cross. This is a pass that takes great skill and a deft touch to deliver.
Central Midfielder
The central midfielder will go anywhere on the field and has both offensive and defensive responsibilities. The central midfielder must be able to dribble the ball with ease and pass it accurately. The central midfielder has to be responsible on the defensive end of the field and then quickly and decisively start the attack. The central midfielder needs excellent vision to find an open teammate so he can pass the ball out in front of him.
Defensive Midfielder
The defensive midfielder must display great patience and physical strength. You have to be aware of how the opposing offense is trying to attack and then get yourself in position to blunt that attack. When the team is attacking, the defensive midfielder must maintain his position so that he can get back in an effective defensive stance if the play quickly turns around. The defensive midfielder needs a strong mindset to stop an opponent and that has to be his priority.

Whether a player is a defensive, central or attacking midfielder, he must have quick recognition of open players so he can deliver strong and accurate passes. Midfielders must be fully confident of their ability to deliver a pass in stride to his teammates while maintaining his position so he can always fulfill defensive responsibilities.
