Onion & HDL Levels

Excessive cholesterol levels increase your chance of developing heart disease. Cholesterol is separated into two categories: bad cholesterol, or LDL cholesterol; and good cholesterol, or HDL cholesterol. While cholesterol is vital in helping build and maintain healthy cells, excessive LDL cholesterol is unable to be utilized by the body, so this waxy substance begins to collect along artery walls. Increasing HDL cholesterol helps prevent LDL buildup. Consuming some foods, such as onions, may raise HDL levels.

Onion Active Compounds

Onions are perhaps best known for their strong odor and flavor, but they also contain active compounds known to provide medicinal benefits. Compounds within onions include quercetin, which is a flavonoid, and phytochemicals. According to The National Onion Association, quercitin contains high levels of antioxidants, which help eliminate free radicals and repair damage done by these rogue atoms. The Texas A&M University AgriLife Extension reports that free radicals are linked to over 60 diseases and illnesses, and that consumption of onions reduces high blood pressure, enhances blood circulation and hinders blood clots.

Onions and Cholesterol

A study outlined by The National Onion Association found that higher concentrations of quercetin hindered LDL oxidation. Perhaps one of the most promising findings is outlined by the Texas A&M University AgriLife Extension Service, which reports that people who consumed onions on a daily basis increased their HDL cholesterol levels by an average of 30 percent.

Recommendations

To obtain the highest HDL cholesterol benefits from onions, Texas A&M University AgriLife Extension Service suggests consuming half a raw onion per day. The National Onion Association reports that onions with strong, pungent odors contain the most quercetin.

Warning

While initial research finds onions may contribute to increased HDL cholesterol and reduced LDL cholesterol levels, do not rely solely on onion supplementation to control your cholesterol levels. Talk to your doctor about the safety of consuming onions if you are currently on cholesterol medication, or any other medication, to determine if any adverse interactions might occur.
