If you have an allergic skin condition associated with oranges, drinking a tea that contains orange oil can cause mouth sores. Mouth sores that form after drinking tea with orange oil need to be evaluated by a medical doctor. Some allergic reactions could lead to life-threatening symptoms if not treated. Common allergy-related conditions that could cause mouth sores or blisters to develop include oral allergy syndrome, allergic contact dermatitis and hives. Most sores will appear within a few minutes of drinking the tea and should subside within a few hours.
Oral Allergy Syndrome
If you're allergic to certain grass pollen, you may expereince mouth sores after consuming orange bi-products. According to the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, your immune system may confuse the proteins found in oranges with pollen in some grasses. If you've been diagnosed with hay fever, your mouth blisters or sores may be the result of pollen-food syndrome. Most symptoms from this allergy condition affect the mouth and surrounding areas with itching, irritation and a burning sensation. In severe cases, yo9u may develop blisters from this condition.
Allergic Contact Dermatitis
Sometimes, certain substances cause a hypersensitivity in your skin from when you come into direct contact with the substance. Certain citrus fruits can trigger allergic contact dermatitis, such as oranges. This allergy condition will cause mouth sores almost immediately after drinking tea with orange oil. Allergic contact dermatitis will cause bumps to develop that are very itchy and red in color. Treat this reaction by rinsing your mouth with water and avoiding all foods that contain orange oil.
Hives
Hives are an allergic skin rash that may be a sign of a severe allergic reaction. Welt-like sores may develop in your mouth if you're allergic to orange oil. Hives of not harmful, but may be a symptom of a dangerous allergic reaction. Hives that develop in your mouth needs to be reported to your physician because if the rash develops in your throat you may not be able to breathe. Hives may also lead to swelling in your lips, face, mouth and gums. Swelling anywhere in your face should be assessed by your health care provider.
Treatment
Avoid all products that contain orange oil or any orange ingredients. Talk with your doctor before using any over-the-counter medications. A common medication used to treat mouth sores from an allergic reaction is an oral antihistamine. A severe allergic reaction may need an injection of epinephrine to alleviate symptoms.
