Natural Licorice Chews are a soft black licorice candy produced by Panda, a candy company started in Finland in 1920. Panda first produced trademarked Natural Licorice Chews in 1977. Today, Panda makes its famous licorice and variations of it for sale worldwide.

About Licorice

Licorice comes from the roots of the licorice plant, a weed that grows abundantly throughout dry regions in Europe. According to Licorice International, Americans commonly use anise seed instead of licorice root to flavor licorice products because of its similar taste. Licorice candies produced with anise seed, however, are not pure licorice. In addition to its use for candy, licorice root extract offers potential health benefits. Licorice tea may help sooth a sore throat, and small doses of licorice may help fight bronchitis and coughs.

Ingredients

Natural Licorice Chews are an all-natural candy. The Panda website lists the ingredients as molasses, wheat flour, licorice extract, and natural flavor in the form of aniseed oil. Natural Licorice chews contain no added animal products, gelatin, nuts or soy, making them an excellent treat if you have allergies to any of those ingredients. Panda Chews do not contain fat, preservatives, artificial coloring or artificial flavoring, and are free of white sugar.

Nutrition

One serving of Panda Natural Licorice chews equals about 15 pieces, or 40 g. A single serving contains 130 calories, no fat, 31 g of carbohydrates, 17 g of sugar and 2 g of protein. If diabetic or follow a low-glucose diet, you can eat these candies in moderation, but they do contain glucose from the molasses and wheat flour.

Varieties

Panda makes many varieties of licorice candy. In addition to Natural Licorice Chews, they offer the same black licorice in a bar, as well as licorice creams, bridge mixes and chocolate-covered licorice chews with their black licorice base. They also produce an herb Natural Licorice Chew. If you do not prefer black licorice, Panda offers cherry and raspberry-flavored red licorice chews, with all natural ingredients.
