Avocado is a versatile fruit that you can eat plain or add to nearly any dish. While the fruit contains a variety of essential vitamins and minerals, it contains a lot of fat and you should therefore eat it in moderation. Many different varieties of avocado are available, depending on the season and your location. Most have a similar taste, with the Fuerte, Hass and Gwen varieties typically being the most flavorful.

Step 1

Slice the avocado in half with a sharp knife, and then remove the pit from the center. You may need to scoop it out with a spoon.

Step 2

Remove the flesh with a wooden spoon by scooping along the entire inside of the skin.

Step 3

Mash it up and mix it with a touch of mayonnaise for serving on bagels, crackers or rolls.

Step 4

Mix cubed avocado with corn, bell peppers and tomato slices for a nutritious, colorful and delicious side dish. Add other fruits and vegetables, as desired, to create your own signature avocado dish.

Step 5

Serve fresh avocado on top of a fruit salad and sprinkle with bacon bits and sesame seeds for an alternative to standard summer salads. You can also combine it with strawberries, kiwifruit and star fruit for a more exotic fruit salad.

Step 6

Make guacamole with fresh avocado by combining ground onion, cilantro, chili peppers and mashed avocado in a large bowl, and then tossing in chopped tomato. Serve in a corn tortilla or with tortilla chips.

Step 7

Cut the avocado into slices and serve alone, with dipping sauce, or place on top of burgers or sandwiches.

Step 8

Toss cubed avocado into chili or stew for a special treat.
